Flats and Handwashing Challenge: Day 2

Today is Day 2 of the Second Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge hosted by Dirty Diaper Laundry. You can read about the challenge and why I'm doing it in my Day 1 post.

It was a ROUGH first day. I'm still trying to figure out which flat folds work for us. My kite fold was a giant fail, my origami fold is pretty sloppy and My prefold fold is ok. I had no idea that there were so many ways to fold a flat diaper! They all have there pros and cons.

My fail fold

So why was yesterday rough? For one, it was raining all day so we were stuck in the house. Because of that, E was pretty cranky. Secondly, Two of E's covers ended up with poop all over them. Third, hand washing was pretty exhausting. I had about 10 flats and 5 covers that needed to be washed. I had intentions of using my sexy pink & zebra print gloves but went with using my bare hands. Not the best idea. I was finally done with washing and hanging by midnight.

When I woke up this morning, most of my flats and covers were still wet. By noon, almost all flats were dry besides for 4 and some of my covers.

Today's topic is: What Supplies I am Using?

Not everything is pictured above but this is basically what I'm working with:
Flats:
  • 12 OsoCozy unbleached flats
  • 6 receiving blankets (unless I find some more)
Covers:
  • 2 Flip covers
  • 2 Kawaii Covers
  • 2 covers from Rock-a-bye Booty
Washing:
  • Bath tub
  • Rockin' Green detergent
  • Gloves
Drying:
  • Hang dry over a fence outside
  • Hang dry inside over chairs, etc on rainy days
and 2 Snappis. I'm very tempted to start using pockets stuffed with flats but really wanted to try to stick with the "old school" way.

As for washing and drying, like I mentioned yesterday, I'm hand washing in my bath tub and hanging my flats to dry over chairs and whatever else I can hang them over since its been raining the last few days. I still have yet to ask my mother-in-law if I can borrow the foldable line dryer that we gave to her. I will definitely be doing that today!

Come back tomorrow for an update and find out what my favorite way to use flats is!

  1. Goodness you are brave...all that handwashing! have you tried using the Jo Fold? I use terry flats with my twins mainly and this fold with a cover serves us well with few leaks...i posted about it here http://mummymusingsandmayhem.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/terry-flat-nappieswet-weather-saviour.html
if you are interested. well done you...it is a huge job to be doing them by hand...i am loving following your progress though!!

  2. My favorite is just pad folding it and laying it in the cover! Not finding it too hard YET but my baby has not pooped and I have a nice outdoor clothesline in a dry climate (very quick drying). I'm curious what your favorite fold is!
