Flats and Handwashing Challenge: Day 3

Today is Day 3 of the Second Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge hosted by Dirty Diaper Laundry. You can read about the challenge and why I'm doing it in my Day 1 post.

Yesterday went much better then the day before and there were fewer diapers that needed to be washed. Last night I washed about 4 flats, 3 receiving blankets and 2 covers. I hand washed the covers in my sink while I did the flats in the tub.

Today's topic: My favorite way to use flats

I was having a rough time finding a flat fold that worked for us until yesterday when Jode from Mummy Musings and Mayhem introduced me to the Jo fold. I absolutely LOVE IT! It works perfectly for us and is a fold that I can actually do somewhat properly.

Not terrible, right?
Another way I like to use flats is to use the pad fold and just lay them in a diaper cover. It's simple and doesn't take much work. The only issue is that sometimes poop will get on the cover if E is moving around a lot.

The night time routine of using a pad fold and laying the flat in the diaper cover while using another flat on E has worked great! There have been no leaks at all.

I'm still playing with different folds to see what works but have found certain folds I don't care for such as the the kite fold. Some other folds I've seen seem way too complicated. I don't want to bother with them but decided to give a few a try. I'll let you know the outcome!

After the challenge I plan to use my flats as pocket inserts or pad fold them and use them with my Flips. I use my prefolds as inserts so why not flats? I'm also considering using them as an alternative to paper towels.

Come back tomorrow to find out what my thoughts on handwashing. I'm also going to post that picture of my pink & zebra print gloves I've talked about in earlier posts! =P
