Lunapads Washable Menstrual Pads {Review & #Giveaway}

Photobucket
I learned about mama cloth a few months back and since then, I've been interested in trying it. For the last month or so, I've been using reusable cotton menstrual pads from Lunapads. I'm normally not a pad type of person but started using them after E was born. I pretty much alternate between pads and tampons but haven't used tampons since reading this on the Lunapads blog.

About Lunapads (from their website):

Lunapads International is a women-owned and operated social mission-based business based in Vancouver, Canada. Our goal is to help individuals have healthier and more positive experiences of their menstrual cycles, and by extension, their bodies overall. Lunapads' mission is to create more positive and informed relationships between menstruators, their bodies and the Earth. We embrace a global perspective, in terms of wellbeing and empowerment for women and girls, as well as toward our responsibility with respect to sustainability.

There are many benefits of using reusable menstrual products. For one, Lunapads are better for environment. Since becoming a mom, I've become more environmentally conscious. Did you know that is takes hundreds of years for disposable pads to break down in landfills and most likely will never fully decompose?

Another benefit from using mama cloth is the huge savings! If you care for your Lunapads properly, they can last up to 5 years versus the couple of hours you get out of disposable pads. Lunapads has a great cloth saving analysis on their website. They estimate the overall savings by using a Lunpads Deluxe Kit at a whopping $200.37 per 5 years!

Like I mentioned above, I had the opportunity to try a Lunapads Maxi Pad (pictured left) and Pantyliner (on right) in the Pocketful of Posies print. The Lunapads Maxi has two parts which are a Pad Base featuring wings that fasten around the gusset of your underwear and also a removable Liner insert. Check out the "How to" video below!

The Maxi pad is very soft and comfortable unlike disposable pads which tend to feel bulky. To be completely honest with you, whenever I used a disposable pad I felt pretty gross. A Lunapads Maxi Pad is so much more breathable and it doesn't even feel like I'm wearing a pad!

The Maxi Pad is also very absorbent! My periods are heavier so if I wear to use a regular disposable pad, I would have to change it frequently. With a Lunapads Maxi Pad, I get an extra 30 minutes or so of use than I normally would with a disposable. Another option for a heavier period would be the Heavy Pad & Wing Liner. Not only can it be used for a heavy flow, it's recommended for postpartum use!

The Lunapads Pantyliner is similar to the Maxi by having wings that fasten around the gusset of your underwear. It's great for light menstrual flow and to use as a back-up if you're using a menstrual product such as The Diva Cup.

Lunapads are also very easy to clean and can be washed by hand or in a washing machine. I usually pre-soak or rinse them off in cold water prior to washing as suggested on the Lunapads website.

You will find The Diva Cup, pad wet bags, pouches, laundry detergents and more on the Lunapads website. The also have underwear called Lunapanties that are a hybrid of underwear and Lunapads. They have a sewn-in fleece gusset panel that acts as a replacement for disposable pantyliners and pads! Current styles include hipster, bikini and brief. I love the idea and would totally try the hipster Lunapanties!

  4. I wanted to tell you that you can try using Oxy Clean powder or the OC spray and a bar of white soap to clean your LunaPads. That's what I use when I'm soaking them in cold water for a few days. If you use the OC spray I finally figured out that it works better to rinse the pads in cold water and squeeze the pads of the water, then spray the OC spray on and let them sit for a while before doing anything else. I find that my pads come really clean that way before I run them through the washer/dryer. Great giveaway.

  9. Ive been using Luna pads for 3 years now, which has included a pregnancy and post partum period, and I just love them!!! I have just recently purchased the diva cup which I should receive in the mail any time! When I bought my pads, the snaps were plastic, most of which are still in excellent condition, but one pads snap broke in the washed, leaving me with one less usable pad. So, that's what I would be using the GC for if I win, new pads!!! Hope I win, good luck everyone!!!! Awesome giveaway!!!
